Erik ten Hag decided to drop Manchester United captain Harry Maguire out of his starting line-up as Manchester United face on Liverpool and he has explained why he dropped the English man tonight.
Ten Hag’s reason to bring in Varane for Maguire seems less tactical, but simply that the Frenchman is an improvement on the Englishman, who has been struggling for form for some time.
The Dutchman suggested that Harry Maguire’s communication and mobility has not been good enough and he expects things to improve with the former Real Madrid man taking his place against Liverpool.
Ten Hag explained:
“Varane is a very experienced player, won everything and will bring the communication in the back four. We want mobility and agility in the back four. I don’t have to mention Maguire, Ronaldo… they will play a role in the future”.
Luke Shaw and Cristiano Ronaldo were also left out as the front three, with Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Anthony Elanga lead the attack against Liverpool tonight and the manager’s decision to drop Maguire paid off.
